Four Pillars of Destiny

by

Vic Ketis

The Four Pillars of Destiny is an ancient system of Chinese Solar Astrology finding renewed interest today because of its applicability to Feng Shui. It can be used to not only ascertain a person's general characteristics and energy dynamics, but also determine what elements are favorable to a person.

As with all systems of astrology, Four Pillars of Destiny is an interpretation of the cosmological energy qualities, represented by characters that are present at each moment of time. A chart of this energy configuration can be drawn up.

This Chinese system of interpretation is based on the system of the 5 elements, and 12 Animal signs. There are 4 combinations of 2 characters, thus it is called the Four Pillars. They represent your year, month, day and hour of birth. These characters are interpreted singly, and in relationship to each other. The interpretation however is much more complex than what is often expressed in most Chinese astrology literature. This Chinese or ''animal astrology'' interprets from one character only, your year of birth. As such only a limited amount of information can be obtained and may not highlight specific individual qualities and characteristics.

Four Pillars Astrology can interpret many qualities and themes in a person's energetic make up, such as relationships, creativity, status, resources, money, career preferences, health, strengths and weaknesses etc.

The cycles that are encountered over the course of a lifetime can also be listed out. They are called ''Luck pillars'' and illuminate which cycles are more favorable and which more difficult, and the prevalent themes of these time periods. With this information we know potential energy situations and how to negotiate these time periods. Are they times of growth where we can proceed confidently, or are they more challenging where more care, caution and discretion is appropriate.

The influence of each year can also be deduced; this year is the Chinese year of the Horse and 2003, the Chinese year of the Goat. This yearly information is also woven into the matrix of analysis.

The Four pillars also has special emphasis to Feng Shui as a persons favorable elements can be ascertained, this being important in recommendations and choice of color, décor, furnishings, etc. This knowledge can bring more harmony to, and strengthen a persons living environment. Recommendations of an unfavorable element can create imbalance and disharmony.

Because it is elementally based and considered to be one of the eight limbs of Traditional Chinese medicine, one of its strengths is ascertaining health qualities and trends, and thus recommendations can be made accordingly.

Four Pillars is markedly different from the western system of astrology, which is based on the placement and aspecting of the 10 planets in the 12 Zodiac signs and 12 houses. However the interpretation will be almost identical in terms of personal qualities, themes and transits.

Applications of Four Pillars of Destiny

ˇ     Examine personal qualities, strengths and weaknesses

ˇ     What cycle you are experiencing and what the future will bring (your luck pillars/transits). This can be a strong guide as to how to manage yourself through certain time period and  what are the prevalent themes of those time periods, eg: money, relationships, travel etc

ˇ     What will the yearly cycles will mean, and what sort of influences, beneficial or challenging, will they bring

ˇ     Potential for prosperity and financial success, good health, and relationships

ˇ     Indicate career direction as this is indicated by the element that dominates your Destiny

ˇ     Assessment of relationship compatibility

ˇ     Health indicators and personal trends in this area- dietary, supplement and lifestyle advice

ˇ     If you are in challenging cycles you have to be more careful of the decisions you make and watch your actions, as you are more susceptible to making mistakes or making the wrong decision.

An advantage of this system is that a chart and its analysis is still possible if time of birth is not known.

Relevance to Feng Shui-

ˇ     Highlight personal characteristics. You need to understand your clients if you are going to help them and to make balance.

ˇ     It indicates favorable and unfavorable elements giving an indication of Feng Shui requirements such as type of house, (brick or wood etc) and location, eg: near water, desert, mountains etc.

ˇ     Recommendations of color, décor, furnishings and objects to improve personal living environments. Recommendations of the wrong element may not enhance a person's fortune.

Give advice on how to manage life situations and how to meander through challenging times. A client might be experiencing difficulties-it might not be in their Feng Shui. They could be going through unfavourable and/or challenging cycles in their life destiny and their Four Pillars can illuminate that.
